Unveiling Inner Tranquility: Navigating Mind Chatter for Black Women Over 40

Dear Soul Sisters,

Something remarkable happens on the path to healing… we are required to sloooow down, prioritize rest and form awareness of our individual healing journey. What seems scary at first is that the body begins to echo its past. Hormonal shifts create a mental chorus of the ‘would’ve, could’ve, should’ve’ ensemble.

This chamber music of thoughts is completely normal.

As I dawned 50, I remember going to my doctor repeatedly to ask for relief. ‘What is happening to me?’ My list of ailments seemed to grow each time I went. From waking up gasping for air to tingling in my extremities. I was convinced ‘I’m dying’. Dramatics.

I made him run test after test. Shaking his head, He simply said…. it’s your hormones, you’re entering perimenopause. I responded, 'Well, I’m gonna need something 'cause this is bananas.

Today, let us embark on a journey to unveil the sanctuary of mental wellness by navigating mind chatter for black women over 40, while recognizing the profound influence of brain health on our well-being.

The Mind's Symphony: Navigating Mind ChatterThe mind, our most loyal companion, can sometimes become an overzealous storyteller. It narrates tales of worries, regrets, and hypothetical scenarios. This mind chatter can be overwhelming, but remember, it is not the entirety of your being. It is a part, and you hold the power to guide its narrative.

The Physiology of Brilliance: Brain Health and Black Women Over 40As we navigate the vibrant landscape of our 40s and beyond, it's crucial to acknowledge the physiological intricacies at play. Studies show that the first hormone level to drop is usually progesterone, and this can be related to irritability, mood swings and brain fog.

The drop in progesterone can also cause sleep disturbances.

Hormonal shifts, which can be more pronounced in Black women, may influence mood, cognition, and overall mental well-being. Embracing brain-boosting practices becomes not just beneficial, but essential.

Navigating on the Path to Mental Wellness

  1. Mindful Anchoring: Begin with mindfulness, a practice that grounds us in the present moment. Take time daily to simply breathe. Let each inhale and exhale be a reminder that you are here, now, in this moment.

  2. The Dance of Self-Reflection: Engage in introspective practices. Journaling or meditation allows you to step back and observe the mind chatter without being consumed by it. Recognize that you are the observer, not just the observed.

  3. The Nourishment of Connection: Seek meaningful conversations that enrich your soul. Engage with trusted confidantes who provide a safe space for expression. Connecting with others can be a balm for the mind.

  4. Somatic Movement: Bridging Body and Mind: Gentle movements, such as yoga or Tai Chi, offer a bridge between the physical and mental realms. They encourage a harmonious dialogue between body and mind, alleviating tension and fostering serenity.

  5. Nutrition as Nurturer: Remember that what you feed your body, you also feed your mind. Incorporate brain-boosting nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and a rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

  6. Drink water and mind your business: We are created with more than 70% water. The brain needs this liquid gold which signals brain balance and satiety. When our brain is happy, rested and calm, we can process with clarity and connectedness.

Mind chatter and the onset of other mental health conditions usually happen more as we enter the 'dark months'. Half of the battle is knowing that we are not alone. Within each of us resides a sanctuary of peace and stillness, amidst life's symphonies. We have the power to shape the narrative of our mind and nurture our brain's brilliance.
